Screwworm Infestation in Livestock

Currently, the Screwworm (GBG) remains in the eradication phase, with positive cases reported in all provinces of Panama except the Guna Yala Comarca. At the regional level, positive cases have been reported in other countries such as Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Belize, and Mexico to date.

A multidisciplinary team of professionals specialized in the prevention of Screwworm Infestation in Livestock (SIL) works to mass-produce sterile screwworm flies and release them in the field, while also conducting ground-based epidemiological surveillance to ensure the sustainability of the Permanent Biological Barrier of Prevention.
